কোন noun যদি একটি abbreviation বা শব্দসংক্ষেপ হয় এবং তার প্রথম অক্ষর consonant হলেও যদি তা উচ্চারণ করতে হলে প্রথমে vowel sound উচ্চারিত হয় তাহলে তার আগে an বসে।

যেমনঃ
আমার চাচা একজন এম, এ, পাশ ব্যক্তি = My uncle is an M.A.
তােমার বাবা কি একজন এস, পি?= Is your father an S.P.?
রীনা ব্যাংকে একটি এস, বি, একাউন্ট খুলল= Rina opened an S.B, account with the bank.
কার বাবা এম,পি? = Whose father is an M.P?
তিনি একজন এফ, আর, সি, এস পাশ ব্যক্তি = She is an F.R.C.s.
উনি কি এস, ডি, ও? = Is that person or, he) an S.D.0.?
নিয়ম: নির্দিষ্ট ব্যক্তি, বস্তু ইত্যাদিকে বুঝালে তার নামের আগে the বসে।
যেমনঃ
বাতিটি নিভিয়ে দাও = Put out the lamp.
ব্যাপারটি আলােচনা কর = Discuss the matter,
বইটি টেকিলখানার উপরে রাখ=Put the book on the table.
চারাগাছটিতে পানি দাও= Water the plant.
T-গুলােকে কাট এবং i-গুলােতে ফোটা দাও= Cut the t’s and dot the i’s.
নিয়ম: ‘One’—শব্দটির আগে a বসে।
যেমনঃ
T আমাকে একটি এক টাকার নােট দাও= Give me a one-taka-note.
তার একচোখ কানা= He is a one-eyed man,
আমরা পথের মধ্যে একজন এক-পা-ওয়ালা লােক দেখেছিলাম = We saw a one-legged man in the street.
সে একজন এক বছর বয়স্ক বালক = He is a one-year-old boy.
নিয়মঃ সাধারণভাবে কোন জিনিসের সবগুলােকে বুঝাতে a, an বা the ব্যবহার করা যায়. এমনকি ঐ noun এর plural রূপও ব্যবহার করা যায়।
যেমনঃ
বিড়াল অলস প্রাণী
- A cat is a lazy creature.
- The cat is a lazy creature.
- Cats are lazy creatures.
গােলাপ হল ফুলের রানী
- A rose is the queen of flowers.
- The rose is the queen of flowers.
- Roses are the queen of flowers.
গাধা ভারবাহী পশু
- An ass is a beast of burden.
- The ass is a beast of burden.
- Asses are beasts of burden.
শিয়াল খুব ধূর্ত
- A fox is very sly.
- The fox is very sly.
- Foxes are very sly.

মানুষ জাতি বুঝতে man, human, mankind-এর আগে the বসে না
যেমনঃ
মানুষ মরণশীল= A man is mortal.
or,
Man is mortal.
or, Men are mortal.
কিন্তু The man is mortal. (সঠিক নয়)
নিয়ম: সচরাচর common noun এর পরে of বসলে তার আগে the বসে।
যেমনঃ
এই শ্রেণীর ছাত্র/ছাত্রীরা খুব বাধ্য = The students of this class are very obedient.
বরিশালের চাল বিখ্যাত = The rice of Barishal is famous.
বাংলাদেশের জনগণ দেশপ্রেমিক = The people of Bangladesh are patriotic,
রামপালের কলা বিখ্যাত = The bananas of Rarmpal are famous.
রাজশাহীর আম বিখ্যাত = The mangoes of Rajshahi are famous.
NOTE: কখনও কখনও singular common noun এর আগে the বসালে তা abstract noun এর অর্থ প্রদান করে; অর্থাৎ noun টি কোন ভাব, ধারণা ইত্যাদি প্রকাশ করে বস্তুকে বুঝায় না।
যেমনঃ
গরিব ছেলেটিকে দেখে তার মধ্যে মাতৃত্ব জেগে উঠল = The mother in her arose at the sight of the poor boy.
অনেক মানুষের মধ্যে পশুত্ব আছে = The beast exists in many humans.
তােমার মধ্যকার পশুত্ব দমন কর = Check the beast in you.
দয়ালু মানুষের মধ্যে কিছুটা কবিত্ব থাকে = Something of the poet is there in the hearts of the kind people.
পিতা মরে, কিন্তু পিতৃত্ব কি মরে? = A father dies, but does the father die?
