Countable Noun Definition: A countable noun is the name of anything which can be Counted by number. (যে বস্তুর সংখ্যা গণনা করা যায় তার নামকে countable noun বলে)।
Examples : flower (ফুল), child (শিশু), book (বই), pen, star (তারা), river (নদী) ইত্যাদি জিনিস একটি, দুইটি, তিনটি ইত্যাদি সংখ্যা দিয়ে গণনা করা যায় বলে এই সব noun কে countable noun বলে।

Uncountable Noun
Uncountable Noun Definition: An uncountable noun is the name of anything that cannot be counted by numbers and maybe measured by some other units only. (যে সকল বস্তু সংখ্যা দ্বারা গণনা করা যায় না, শুধু অন্য কোন উপায়ে পরিমাপ করা গেলেও যেতে পারে তাদের নামকে uncountable noun বলে।)
Examples: Table কাঠ বা wood দিয়ে তৈরী করা হয়। সুতরাং এটি হল একটি countable noun. কিন্তু wood বা কাঠ গােনা যায় না বলে এটি হল uncountable noun. এভাবে কোন abstract noun ও uncountable noun. যেমন, ক্ষমা বা forgiveness. এটি একটি abstract noun. একে গণনা করা যায় না বলে এটি হল uncountable noun. এভাবে, water, salt, virtue (গুণ), honesty (সততা), air, sight (দৃশ্য, দৃষ্টি), beauty (সৌন্দর্য) ইত্যাদি হল uncountable noun.

Some Rules of Countable and Uncountable Nouns
RULE-1: Many + Countable Noun
অর্থাৎ countable noun এর সাথে many (অনেক) ব্যবহৃত হয়।
যেমন –
- তার অনেক বই আছে—He has many books.
- অনেক বালক সেখানে খেলছে—Many boys are playing there.
- সে অনেকগুলাে থালা ভৈঙেছে—She has broken many plates.
- এ বিষয়ে অনেক নিয়ম আছে—There are many rules regarding this matter.
[Note: countable noun-এর সাথে much ব্যবহৃত হয় না।]
RULE—2: A Few + Countable Noun
A few = কয়েকজন, কয়েকটি ইত্যাদি।
- আমার অল্প কয়েকটি বই আছে–Thave a few books.
- তার অল্প কয়েকজন বন্ধু আছে—He has a few friends.
- অল্প কয়েকজন লােক সেখানে গিয়েছিল—A few people went there. [Note: A few আর few এর অর্থ এক নয়। নিচে তা প্রমাণিত হবে।
RULE—3: Few + Countable Noun
এখানে few (a few নয়) অর্থ “নেই বললেই চলে।
যেমন :
- আমার এখানে কোন বন্ধু নেই বললেই চলে— have few friends here.
- আমাদের দেশে শিক্ষিত মহিলা নেই বললেই চলে—There are few educated women in our country.
- সে অংক পরীক্ষায় নম্বর পায়নি বললেই চলে (অর্থাৎ, যেমন, ৪ বা ৫ পেয়েছে)—He has obtained few marks in the math. exam.
[Note: Countable noun-এর সাথে যেখানে few বা a few ব্যবহৃত হয় uncountable noun এর ক্ষেত্রে সেখানে যথাক্রমে little ও a little ব্যবহৃত হয়। পরে এসব জানা যাবে।
RULE–4: Much + Uncountable Noun
Countable noun-এর সাথে “অনেক বুঝাতে many ব্যবহৃত হয়, কিন্তু uncountable noun-এর সাথে একই অর্থে much ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমন, তার অনেক বন্ধু আছে—He has many friends, কিন্তু এই পুকুরে অনেক পানি”—বাক্যটি ইংরেজিতে লিখতে হবে—There is (are নয়) much (many নয়) water in this pond. এবার আরও কয়েকটি উদাহরণ দেখ –
- এ বিষয়ে আমার অনেক সন্দেহ আছে– have much doubt about it.
- প্রতিদিন ৩টি করে ডিম আমাদের অনেক শক্তি দেয়—Three eggs per day give us much strength.
- তার অনেক দয়া-He has much kindness.
RULE-5: Little + Uncountable Noun
Countable noun-এর সাথে যে অর্থে few ব্যবহৃত হয় সেই একই অর্থে uncountable noun-এর সাথে little ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমন :
- পাত্রে পানি নেই বললেই চলে – There is little water in the pot.
- এ বিষয়ে আমার কোন জ্ঞান নেই বললেই চলে— have little knowledge about it.
- আমাকে দুধ প্রায় দেওয়াই হয় না ? I am given litle milk.
RULE–6: More + Countable/Uncountable Noun
যেহেতু many এবং much উভয়ের comparative degree হল more, সুতরাং more countable এবং uncountable উভয় noun এর ক্ষেত্রে ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমন :
- আরও বেশি পানি দরকার—More water is needed. (uncountable).
- আরও বেশি লােক দরকার—More people are needed. (countable).
- সেকি আরও বেশি টাকা চায়?—Does he want more money?
RULE–7: Fewer + Countable Noun
Rule-3 দেখ। এবার নিচের sentence গুলাে পড়।
- আজ তার কথায় কম মিথ্যা আছে— There are fewer lies in his speech today.
- আরাে কম সংখ্যক বই বিক্রি করা হয়েছিল—Fewer books were sold.
- আজ বাড়ির কাজ হিসেবে আরও কম সমস্যা দেওয়া হয়েছে—Today fewer problems have been given as assignment.
সুতরাং দুইটির মধ্যে তুলনায় একটি কম এরূপ বুঝালে countable noun-এর আগে fewer বসে। এটি হল few এর comparative.
RULE–8: Less + Uncountable Noun
Fewer যে অর্থে countable noun এর সাথে ব্যবহৃত হয় সেই অর্থে uncountable noun এর সাথে less ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমন-
- এই পাত্রে ঐ পাত্রের চেয়ে কম পানি আছে-There is less water in this pot than in that pot.
- সে তার ভাইয়ের চেয়ে কম পয়সা খরচ করে—He spends less money than his brother.
- তার গায়ের ওজন আমার গায়ের ওজনের চেয়ে কম—She has less weight than I.
RULE–9: Fewest + Countable Noun
Few, fewer, fewest-এগুলাে সব countable noun এর ক্ষেত্রে প্রযােজ্য।
- তার সবচেয়ে কম সংখ্যক কলম আছে—She has the fewest pens. (the এর ব্যবহার লক্ষ্য কর)
- আমি সবচেয়ে কম জায়গায় গিয়েছি-I have been to the fewest places.
RULE-10: Least + Uncountable Noun
Much-less-least—সবই uncountable noun-এর ক্ষেত্রে ব্যবহৃত হয়।
- এই গ্লাসে সবচেয়ে কম পানি ধরে—This glass contains the least water.
- সে সবচেয়ে কম বুঝে—He understands the least,
- মনে হয় মেয়েটি সবচেয়ে কম দ্রতা জানে—The girl seems to know the least gentility.
RULE–11: The few + Countable Noun
“অল্পসংখ্যক”কথাটাকে যদি নির্দিষ্ট করে বুঝানাে হয় তাহলে the few ব্যবহৃত হয়।
- যে সামান্য কয়জন লােক সেখানে গিয়েছিল, তারা যথেষ্ট ছিল না—The few people that went there were not enough.
- আকবর ভারতের হাতে গােনা কয়েকজন রাজার চেয়ে মহান ছিলেন—Akbar was. greater than the few other kings of India.
- তােমার যে ক’খানা চেয়ার আছে এদিয়ে তুমি কি করতে চাও?What do you want to do with the few chairs (that) you have?
RULE–12 : Very few + Countable Noun
- এত “কম” যে খুব জোর দিয়ে বলার প্রয়ােজন আছে—এরূপ ক্ষেত্রে very few ব্যবহৃত হয়।
- বাংলাদেশের খুব কম, জনগণই শিক্ষিত – Very few people of Bangladesh are educated.
- এই স্কুলের খুব কম মেয়েরাই সুন্দরী—Very few girls of this school are beautiful.
- সে খুব কমই কথা বলে—He speaks very few words.
RULE–13: The Very few + Countable Noun
Rule 11—তে বেশি জোর দিয়ে এবং বেশি নির্দিষ্ট করে কিছু বুঝাতে the very few ব্যবহার করা যেত। নিজে নিজে অভ্যাস কর।
RULE–14: Most + Countable/Uncountable Noun
much – more – most
many – more – most
অতএব, much ও many-এর superlative degree একই হওয়াতে (অর্থাৎ most) most countable এবং uncountable উভয় noun এর সাথেই ব্যবহৃত হতে পারে। যেমন :
- এখানকার অধিকাংশ (প্রায় সব) লােকই মুসলমান——Most people of this place are Muslims.
- অধিকাংশ তাপই অপচয় হয়ে গিয়েছিল—Most heat was wasted.
- অধিকাংশ শিশুরাই মিষ্টি খেতে ভালবাসে—Most children are fond of eating sweetmeats.
RULE–15: Several + Countable Noun
Several অর্থ কয়েক, কতিপয়।
- কতিপয় ছাত্র/ছাত্রীরাই ঠিকমত পড়াশুনা করে—Several students study regularly.
- কয়েকটি বড়ি হারিয়ে গেছে—Several pills are missing.
- কতিপয় লােক এই গন্ডগােল লাগিয়েছিল—Several people caused the chaos.
RULE—16: The Rest of + Countable/Uncountable Noun
the rest of = বাকি, অবশিষ্ট।
- সেখানে দশজন ছাত্র ছিল ৪ দুইজন বিজ্ঞান বিভাগের, তিনজন কলা বিভাগের, এবং বাকি। সবাই বাণিজ্য বিভাগের ছাত্র – Ten students were there, two were of the science group, three were of the art group, and the rest of them were of commerce group.
- তার বাকি কলমগুলাে হারিয়ে গেছে-The rest of her pens have been lost.
- অবশিষ্ট জনগণ সেখানে বসে ছিল—The rest of the people were sitting there.
RULE–17: Some + Countable/Uncountable Noun
- আমি কিছু পানি চাই—I want some water.
- কিছু কিছু লােক এরকম বলে—Some people say so.
- আমি কিছু বই কিনেছি— have bought some books.
RULE–18: Some of + Countable/Uncountable Noun
- তাদের মধ্যে কেউ কেউ গিয়েছিল—Some of them went.
- তুমি এই দুধের কিছুটা পান করতে পার—You can drink some of the milk.
- কিছু কিছু গাছ ভেঙ্গে পড়েছিল—Some of the trees broke down.
RULE–19: Many of + Countable Noun
- তাদের মধ্যে অনেকেই যাদু জানে—Many of them know magic.
- বইগুলাের মধ্যে অনেকগুলােই ইংরেজিতে লেখা—Many of the books are written in English.
RULE—20: Much of + Uncountable Noun
- পাত্রের অনেক দুধই বাসি—Much of the milk of the pot is stale.
- এই খাদ্যের অনেক অংশেই ভিটামিন আছে—Much of the food contains vitamins.
RULE-21: Several of + Countable Noun
- তাদের মধ্যে কয়েকজন খুব সৎ – Several of them are very honest.
- বাংলাদেশের কয়েকটি নদী অকেজো হয়ে পড়েছে — Several of the rivers of Bangladesh have become useless.
