Is he the doctor we met? (তিনি কি সেই ডাক্তার যার সাথে আমরা সাক্ষাৎ করেছিলাম?)।
তাহলে কিন্তু এতে interrogative pronoun ব্যবহৃত হল না। সেই doctor nounটি রয়েই গেল এবং প্রশ্নের মাধ্যমে তাকেই নিদিষ্ট করে বুঝানাে হল। কিন্তু interrogative pronoun “who”-এর একটি বড় বৈশিষ্ট্য হল এটি কোন কিছুকে নির্দিষ্ট করে বুঝায় না। আর এজন্যে interrogative pronoun ব্যবহার করলে উপরের বাক্যে “doctor” noun টি থাকবে।
যেমন: Who is he?
তাহলে, যে pronoun দ্বারা কোন প্রশ্ন জিজ্ঞাসা করা হয় তাকে interrogative pronoun বলে।

Interrogative pronoun হিসেবে সাধারণত who, which, what-এই তিনটি ব্যবহৃত হয়। এদের মধ্যে case ভেদে শুধু who এর রূপের পরিবর্তন হয়।

Uses of who, which, what
(a) Who:
(i) Subject হিসেবে:
Singular number হিসেবে–Who is he?
Plural number হিসেবে-Who are they?
(ii) Object হিসেবে:
Singular হিসেবে: Who (whom) do you want?
Plural হিসেবে: Who (whom) are you looking for?
NOTE: আধুনিক ইংরেজিতে object হিসেবে whom এর পরিবর্তে who—প্রায়ই ব্যবহৃত হয়।
(b) Which:
Singular হিসেবে: Which of these pens do you want? (কোনটি)
Plural হিসেবে: Which of these books do you want? (কোন্ কোনটি)
NOTE. অনেকগুলাের মধ্য থেকে একটি বা একাধিক সংখ্যক বেছে নেয়া বুঝাতে which ব্যবহৃত হয়।
যেমন: Which of these pens do you want?
(= Which pen do you want? = কলমগুলাের মধ্যে কোন্টি তুমি চাও?)
(c) What:
(i) বস্তুর বেলায়:
Singular এ: What will you eat?
Plural-এ: What are the factors that should be considered? (কি কি বিষয় বিবেচনা করতে হবে?)

(ii) পেশার ক্ষেত্রে:
What is he? (তিনি কি করেন? = তার পেশা কি?)
Who is he? (তার পরিচয় কি? বা তিনি কে?)

(iii) what ও which এর adjective হিসেবে ব্যবহার:
Which pen is yours? (adjective হিসেবে)
Which of these pens is yours? (pronoun হিসেবে)

(iv) Exclamation বা আবেগ প্রকাশের জন্য:
What! Has he failed? (কি বললে! সে ফেল করেছে?)
What a fool you are! (তুমি কী বোকা!)

একটি নিয়ম ও নিয়মটি উদাহরণের মাধ্যমে দেখা যাক।
I am looking for him. (আমি তাকে খুঁজছি)। এখানে him এর পরিবর্তে whom বসালে বাক্যটি হবে। I am looking for whom? (আমি কাকে খুজঁছি?) কিন্তু এই styleটি কথােপকথনে ব্যবহৃত হয়। Grammar বলে যে বাক্যটিকে নিম্নরূপ হতে হবে—
Who (Whom) am I looking for? (আমি কাকে খুঁজছি?)
লক্ষ্য কর, Preposition এখন who/whom এর পরে ব্যবহৃত হয়েছে, আগে নয়। কিন্তু আগের বাক্যটিতে … মনে আছে? এভাবে—
(১) I have come from that city থেকে Which city have I come from?
(২) He went there for duty’s call. (সে কর্তব্যের ডাকে সেখানে গিয়েছিল।) থেকে পাই- What did he go there for? (সে কেন সেখানে গিয়েছিল?)
(৩) You are waiting for the train. থেকে পাই- What are you waiting for? (তুমি কেন অপেক্ষা করছ?)
(৪) He gave the pen to him. থেকে পাই— Who did he give the pen to? (সে কলমটি কাকে দিয়ে ছল?
কিন্তু Who-এর আগে to বসলে কিন্তু who পরিণত হত whom তে। যেমন :
To whom did he give the pen? কিন্তু অর্থ একই থাকত, শুধু গঠনরীতির (structure) রদবদল আরকি।
