What is child labor?

Child labor is any work performed by someone younger than the legal age for adulthood, often 14 to 18 years of age depending on the country. This includes physical and mental labor done in a variety of industries such as agriculture, manufacturing, hospitality services, and domestic service.

What are some of the effects of child labor?

Many child laborers suffer from physical and psychological trauma due to their work conditions, including injuries due to manual labor, exposure to dangerous chemicals or other health hazards, and lack of access to education or vocational training that could help them gain better employment opportunities in the future. Long-term effects can include stunted growth (if malnutrition is an issue), depression and anxiety due to feelings of exploitation and powerlessness, increased risk for chronic diseases later in life due to poor working conditions, long hours with no breaks or overtime pay, as well as other emotional ramifications resulting from a lack of childhood experiences.

How can we help children who are subjected to child labor?

One way we can help is by supporting international organizations that provide assistance directly or indirectly to children who are subjected to child labor. These organizations include Unicef and The International Labor Organization (ILO). Additionally, parents should be educated about how dangerous child labor is; it’s important they understand their children’s rights according their country’s laws regarding minimum age for employment so they can protect their children from these exploitative situations. Finally, consumers should look for goods labeled “fair trade certified” which provides assurance that goods have been produced without the use of child laborers or unsafe working conditions for adults.

Conclusion:
Child labor has been around for centuries but continues to be an issue in many countries today. It causes serious harm not just in its immediate effects on physical safety but also through its long-term impacts on individuals' growth and development. Laws protecting against underage work must continue to be enforced while providing aid for those already caught in exploitative situations. With support from both government institutions and concerned citizens we can help ensure that all children have a safe environment in which they are able to learn and grow without fear of exploitation.
