নিচের বাক্যগুলো পড়ঃ
1. Rahim is a good boy.
2. Rahim is better than Karim. (রহিম করিমের চেয়ে ভাল।)
3. Rahim is the best boy in the class. (রহিম ক্লাশের সবার মধ্যে শ্রেষ্ঠ ছেলে)
বাক্য তিনটিতে একটি মাত্র adjective বিভিন্ন প্রয়োজনে বিভিন্ন রূপে (form) ব্যবহৃত হয়েছে Adjective টি হল good (ভাল)। নিচের ছকের মাধ্যমে ঘটনাটা দেখানো যায় ?
বাক্য কতজনের মধ্যে তুলনা বুঝাচ্ছে Adjective এর রূপ Degree of Comparison
১ম একজন (Rahim)- Good – positive
২য় দুইজন (Rahim ও Karim)- better – comparative
৩য় দুইয়ের অধিক (ক্লাশের সবাই)- the best – superlative
ছকটি মন দিয়ে পড়ে থাকলে এখন নিশ্চয়ই বুঝতে পারছ কেন একটি মাত্র adjective ভিন্ন ভিন্ন sentence-এ রূপ পাল্টালো। কারণ হল, adjective-এর রূপ নির্ভর করে কতজন ব্যক্তি বা কতটি ব্যক্তির মধ্যে তুলনা স্থাপন করার জন্য তা ব্যবহৃত হচ্ছে তার উপর। এভাবে প্রায় সকল adjective-ই তুল্য ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুর সংখ্যার পরিবর্তনের সাথে সাথে পরিবর্তিত হয় ; অর্থাৎ, তাদের degree of comparison রয়েছে।
Degree of Comparison
উপরের Table থেকে আরও জানা গেল যে degree of comparison তিন প্রকার ; যথা
(a) Positive
(b) Comparative
(c) Superlative
কিভাবে adjective-এর degree-র পরিবর্তন করতে হয় তা জানার আগে আমরা দেখব কোন্ কোন্ ধরনের adjective-এর degree of comparison নাই এবং কোন্টির আছে।
He has much (অনেক) money.
He has more money than I. (তার আমার চেয়ে বেশি টাকা আছে।)
He has the most money in the village. (এই গ্রামে তার সবচেয়ে বেশি টাকা আছে।)
এভাবে little-এর degree of comparison আছে। এগুলো হল adjective of quantity. কিন্তু অন্যান্য adjective of quantity,
যেমন: no, none, some, enough, sufficient ইত্যাদি degree of comparison নাই৷
প্রায় সমস্ত adjective of quality-র degree of comparison আছে।

Many (many–more–most) এবং few (few-fewer—fewest) ছাড়া অনন্যা numeral adjective গুলোর degree of comparison নেই।
যেমনঃ Two, seven, sixth, double ইত্যাদির কোন degree of comparison হয় না।
কোন pronominal adjective-এরই degree of cornparisonনাই।
যেমন: this, that, which, what, each, any ইত্যাদির কোন degree of comparison নাই।
Example
কতকগুলো descriptive adjective যেমন dead, lame (খোড়া), blind (অন্ধ), one-eyed (কানা) ইত্যাদির কোন degree of comparison নাই।
বিভিন্ন রং যেমন white (সাদা), black (কালো), green (সবুজ), yellow (হলুদ), | pink (ধূসর, লাল), brown (বাদামী), blue (নীল) প্রভৃতির কোন degree of comparison নাই।
বিভিন্ন আকৃতি বাচক adjective যেমন round (গোলাকার) square (চৌকো)– প্রভৃতির কোন degree of camparisonনাই।।
এছাড়া yearly (বাৎসরিক), half-yearly (ষান্মাসিক), perennial (বর্ষজীবি, চিরজীবি), centennial (শতবার্ষিক), millenarian (আসন্ন স্বর্ণযুগ সংক্রান্ত), monthly (মাসিক), weekly (সাপ্তাহিক), fortnightly (পাক্ষিক), several (কয়েক), lunar (চান্দ্র), solar (সৌর) প্রভৃতি adjective-গুলোর কোন degree of comparison নাই।
Comparison of Adjective Exercise
সত্য (True) হলে T এবং মিথ্যা (False) হলে F লিখ।
(1) সকল pronominal adjective (যেমন which, that) এর degree of comparison হয়।
(2) much ও little বাদে সব quantitative adjective এর degree of cornparisonআছে।
(3) প্রায় সমস্ত adjective of the quality-র degree of comparison হয়।
(4) manyও few বাদে সকল adjectives of number-এর degree of comparison হয়।
(5) oblong (আয়ত), square (বর্গ), circular (গোলাকার), round (গোলাকার)—এই adjective গুলোর degree of comparison নাই।

Conclusion
Comparative এবং Superlative গঠন করার নিয়মাবলী। এক syllable বিশিষ্ট adjective সমূহ ও দুই syllable বিশিষ্ট কিছু কিছু adjective-এর শেষে erযোগ করে comparative এবং estযোগ করে superlative করা হয়। যেমন :
