Introduction

The 21st of February is a red-letter day in our national life. Every year on this very day the whole nation comes to the martyr’s monument (স্তম্ভ) and the ritual (প্রথাগত অনুষ্ঠান) seems to affect a purification (শুদ্ধিকরণ) of souls.

Facts of the day

On this day in 1952, the brave sons of ‘Mother Bengal laid down their lives to protect the interest of the mother language. After the birth of Pakistan, the ruler of West Pakistan wanted to impose Comics ‘Urdu’ on the Bengali-speaking people as the state language of Pakistan. But everybody, especially the students of the then East Pakistan demanded Bengali as the state Language.

As a result, the Language Movement took place. The then Pakistan Govt. wanted to stop this movement by imposing section 144. But the patriotic and fearless sons of our soil brought out a procession defying section 144 on the 21st February 1952. That day Rafiq, Salam, Jabber, and others were brutally killed. Many were injured and hundreds were arrested.

    How observed

    Every year on this day people come to The Shaheed Minars and offer their respect to the martyrs. The government, different organizations, and institutions arrange programs to celebrate the day. Besides, according to a decision of the UNESCO on Nov. 17, 1999, this day is now the International Mother Language Day. The International Mother Language Day is now being observed all over the world with due respect.

    This day has a great influence on the whole nation as it did in the past. This will go on in the future too. In fact, this movement led the nation to its liberation. Also, every year this day reminds the world that every nation’s mother tongue should be protected.
