Causes of Climate Change

The increase in greenhouse gases in the atmosphere is responsible for climate change. The main greenhouse gas is carbon dioxide. Other greenhouse gases include Methane, Nitrous Oxide, and Chlorofluorocarbons. Due to the destruction and burning down of tropical rain forests, the use of fossil fuels, the rapid growth of the industry, the use of CFCs in packaging and manufacturing commercial products, greenhouse gases are increasing. These trap heat in the atmosphere and global warming occurs which results in climate. change.

Climate change and Bangladesh

Bangladesh is under a great threat of climate change. Already the country has had bitter experiences of climate change. Bangladesh is being affected by frequent natural calamities (দুর্যোগ) during recent years. These calamities include floods, cyclones, tidal bores, excessive rainfall, riverbank erosion (ক্ষয়), drought (অনাবৃষ্টি), etc. Bangladesh experiences an intense (তীব্র) flood almost every four years.

Besides, there are yearly floods of lesser magnitude. On the other hand, cyclones like ‘Sidr’, ‘Nargis’, ‘Aila’ have become regular phenomena for the people of coastal (উপকূলীয়) areas. These cyclones are often associated (সংযুক্ত) with tidal bores. Droughts of various magnitude also affect 20-46 percent of the land of Bangladesh every year.

According to the ‘Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change’, the sea-level of the Bay of Bengal will be increased by about 100 CM by 2100 due to climate change. Such a rise in the sea level will flood nearly 17% of our total land area. This will destroy the physical infrastructure of the flooded area and one-fifth of our total population will be homeless.

    How to face climate change

To face climate change, we have to check global warming. For this, we need to control the emission of greenhouse gases. Green earth may make it possible. So, we have to invest in afforestation and divest from deforestation. Besides, we have to minimize the use of fossil fuels and turn to renewable energy.

    Conclusion

Climate change is a global problem. If we fail to face this problem properly, the world will no more be inhabitable. So, it is high time we all took concerted efforts against climate change.
